I found this text particularly useful in relation to my reading on H.G. Wells and his use of science fiction for social commentary. This text focuses on using the concept of alien species as a substitute for foreign nations to the audience, highlighting in films such as Men in Black the hybridisation of language for their alien technology and comparing it to the way say an American might add extra vowels in imitation of Mexican Spanish, or an Englishman may add a flair to their accent in imitation of the French. This Text however is separated into three distinct sections focusing on language as previously mentioned as well as alien anxieties, which the black civil rights movement is used a comparison and finally the alien identity using homosexuality and feminism as examples of ‘other’ identities to the mainstream humanity.
