Mathews, R. (2002) Fantasy: The Liberation of Imagination, Routledge.
A useful way to begin learning about the genre and various franchises and successful or notable works of the fantasy genre, however I found that it was precisely that, an entry point rather than the in depth piece I was expecting. It was useful in helping me round out certain opinions and gain perspective on the genre yet I don’t believe it has offered deeper insight into the genre of the ways in which the tropes and themes of fantasy are used. I simply feel more confident in views I already held, so it was useful in that sense.
