Hsieh, I.H. (2012) Filial Daughter, Woman Warrior, or Identity-Seeking Fairytale Princess: Fostering Critical Awareness Through Mulan. Children’s Literature in Education Journal, Vol 43, Issue 3, p213-222.
This journal examines the the ways in which the tale of Mulan has been altered over time and distance. I found the idea that the tale as known by American’s of Chinese descent may be entirely unfamiliar to those born in China, suggesting that their new homeland misrepresents their heritage. The text offers examples of multiple translations that alter the perspective of the tale as well as describing this concept of cultural evolution through translation as way of showing plurality and fluidity in cultures today, specifically in relation to those with Chinese heritage.
